Young Ladies Guide to Shaving

So you have started shaving your legs and armpits, or maybe you just want to. First, be sure this is something you really want to do, because once you start shaving you need to keep doing it. Stubble looks a lot worse than the fine hairs that you have before shaving! If you’re blonde or you have really fine hair, your leg and/or armpit hair may not be all that noticeable yet. Ideally, get the opinion of a close friend, or preferably an older sister. Also, check in with your mom about this. Hopefully she will let you go ahead, but if she doesn’t, you might have to wait. Maybe you can convince her to pick out a nice shave cream and disposable razor for you soon!

Assuming that you are going to shave, you will need: A disposable women’s blade razor and canned shave cream (women’s brand, not your dad’s one!) or soap/body wash. Shave cream is a lot better than soap, but if you have to use soap then a liquid version like body wash is better than bar soap. These instructions are only for using a blade razor, which gives a much better shave than an electric razor. If you do use an electric razor, you will need to do it completely dry – no shave creams, no shower.

First, shower – this will get the hairs softer, resulting in a smoother, easier shave with your blade. If you plan on doing your armpits, be sure to expose them to the shower water early on in your shower to give them more time to soften. Then, while you are still in the shower but without the water running, put shave cream (or soap lather) on your armpits and legs. Then shave – for legs, go from bottom to top. You usually won’t need to do anything above your knees unless you have really obvious hair there.

The tricky bits to do are around your ankle (common mistakes are not starting low enough, and also missing bits because of bony bumps) and your knees (bony bumps again, plus it’s easy to forget the back of the knee if you have hair there). For knees, it will be helpful to shave with your knee straight at first, and then again with it bent. Rinse off your legs and check for any missed bits.

For armpits, in the shower you will need to lift your arm straight up, then bend your elbow in a backward direction so that your fingers rest on the back of your shoulder. This will give your armpit the best exposure for shaving. You will need to shave in two directions. It will be easiest if you make the first one be the same direction as the hair grows, then re-apply the shave cream and shave in the opposite direction. Rinse off and check for any missed bits. Happy shaving! Now you can enjoy wearing shorts and sleeveless tops with confidence.
