How Long Does it Take to Get Rid of Ingrown Hairs?

If you are suffering and want to get rid of ingrown hairs then obviously you want relief now, immediately! The good news is that it is possible depending on the seriousness of the condition.

Here is the outlook:

One or two ingrown hairs can be dealt with instantly. Ingrown hairs over a wide area may take a few days to get rid of. If you are constantly bothered with the problem you may want to consider a permanent solution. So let’s just look at these options in detail:

Immediate Relief

Equipment needed:

Preferably needle-nosed tweezers
Rubbing alcohol
Magnification mirror or strong light

Just get into a position where you can clearly see the trapped hair in the spot causing pain. Sterilize the skin and the tweezers with rubbing alcohol and carefully ease the trapped hair out so it can poke through the surface of the skin.

Then grip the hair firmly with the tweezers and pluck the hair out in one clean, swift movement.

Some find using a needle is helpful in easing the trapped hair out to start with. Again, sterilize the needle, make sure you have a steady hand, and be careful!

Intermediate Relief

If you have a whole bunch of trapped hairs in one area, perhaps around the pubic region or on the neck, then consider a topical solution.

Two popular ones are Tend Skin and Kalo Ingrown Hair Treatment.

By applying these solutions to the surface of the skin regularly for a few days the trapped hairs should automatically be released.

The two products are very similar except that Kalo Ingrown Hair Treatment does not contain Acetylsalicylic Acid and it is therefore safe even for those allergic to aspirin.

Permanent Relief

If you want to get rid of ingrown hairs once and for all then consider treatments like laser or electrolysis. Laser can zap the hair with pulsed light and disable the hair follicle. Electrolysis uses an electrical current to do the same thing.

Many would say that electrolysis is more effective than laser as each hair is treated individually, but then of course, you have to pay for it!

When It Gets Serious

There are times when an ingrown hair can get infected and the surrounding area fills with pus. These can be painful!

In these cases you may want to get the advice of a local physician as it might be necessary to prescribe antibiotics to kill the infection.

Thankfully this doesn’t happen so often. Most times you can get rid of ingrown hairs by using the simple methods mentioned above.
