Are There Less Painful Methods of Eliminating Bikini Razor Bumps?
Men are probably very familiar with razor bumps since they are accustomed to shaving every single day. Razor bumps, sometimes called razor burn or ingrown hair is medically refereed to as pseudofolliculitis Barbae. This is the condition where, after hair has been shaved, it begins to grow back right away punctures the skin as it does so. The result is painful bumps which can get infected and inflamed. When razor bumps occur in the bikini region, they are referred to as pseudofolliculitis pubis. In light-skinned individuals, these bumps can become unsightly and even lead to skin damage.
Ladies are also familiar with razor bumps. While there are those that are afflicted on the chin and facial areas, most ladies contend with ingrown hairs after they shave the bikini region. The advent of low-cut bikinis and minute swim-wear has led many women to begin shaving in order to appear trendy in these outfits. Shaving the bikini area, just like in the facial regions, can cause serious bikini razor bumps.
What causes these bumps
There have been many arguments, some sound and some not, as to why bikini razor bumps occur. It has also been noted that they seem to occur in some people more than in others. One thing is for sure; the curlier your hair is, the more the likelihood of getting razor burn especially in the bikini region. This explains why women of African, Jewish and Mediterranean descent are more likely to succumb to ingrown hairs. The primary reason for this group experiencing more trouble with the razor is that their hair is more course and naturally curly. This means that after it is shaved, it is more likely to puncture the skin as it grows back.
Razor quality
The type of razor used when shaving has been reported to make a lot of difference. While this is still a controversial issue, most experts are in agreement that the older a razor, the higher the chances of getting bikini razor bumps. This is because a blunt razor has lost its edge and will not be able to shave closely. A new razor shaves closely and therefore eliminates the likelihood of bikini razor bumps.
Some have also mentioned that triple or double razors are preferable. Others state that single razors suffice as long as the blade is new. This is another controversial issue where experts have not been able to quite agree.
Other causes
Other reasons why bikini razor bumps occur range from shaving against the direction of hair-growth, shaving on dry skin, not using clinically-approved shaving gels and even wearing the wrong texture of underwear.
Painless methods of eliminating bikini razor bumps
Good old shaving with a new double-edged razor is still the most popular at-home method of eliminating excess bikini hair and their attendant razor bumps. More people are also using other more effective methods.
Bikini waxing
This has become very popular but can be a very painful way of shaving. While this technique comes with such exotic variations such as Brazilian waxing, it involves applying hot glue-like gel which coagulates with the hair and is then removed by means of a sticky strip. While very effective at removing hair, waxing can be very painful to endure.
Electolysis
Electrolysis has become very popular even while it is one of the most expensive methods of hair removal. It works especially well if you want to remove hair permanently. In the this high-tech hair removal method a technician inserts a very fine needle into the hair follicle, then electrocutes the blood vessel that makes the hair grow. This is said to inhibit hair growth. While the method is said to be effective, it is also not entirely painless.
Epilation
For those desiring a way to permanently perform bikini hair removal without razor bumps, this is one of the best methods. While somewhat primitive, it involves removing hair from the roots and can also be moderately painful.
Depilatories
This is one of the most painless hair removal techniques you can ever find and is also great for eliminating razor bumps. It involves clinically-approved cremes that can be applied to the hairy area and which then dissolve the hair follicles from the root. These cremes can be purchased at local pharmacies and beauty stores. One downside with depilatory cremes is that they can irritate the skin especially if applied to sensitive areas.
